Udupi Sri Krishna Temple

Udupi is a city and the headquarters of the Udupi District of Karnataka. It is one of the tourist destinations in South India and an ancient temple city in Karnataka. It is is located at a distance of about 402 km from Bangalore, about 58 Km from Mangalore City, about 166 Km from Chikmagaluru and  310 Km from Mysore. Nearest Railway station is Udupi station about 5 km from Udupi Sri Krishna Temple and nearest Bus stand is Udupi bus stand which is about 3 km from Udupi Sri Krishna Temple.

Udupi Sri Krishna Temple is also known as Udupi Sri Krishna Matha. The temple dedicated to god Krishna and god is worshipped only through a window called the Navagraha Kitiki also called Kanakana Kindi or Kanakana Kitiki. One of the popular story goes like this. Once the Saint Kanaka Dasa came to Udupi as a pilgrim. Being of a lower class, by tradition he was forbidden to enter the temple and have darshana of Sri Krishna. Sri Krishna, pleased by the worship of Kanakadasa created a small hole in the back wall of the temple. But Kanakadasa was not able to see Krishna's face and prayed to give darshan once. Pleased by the worship of Kanakadasa, Lord Sri Krishna turned to face the hole so that Kanakadasa could see him. Later the hole is enlarged it and turned it into a window. It has been a tradition in this temple to worship the Lord only through this window.

Udupi Paryaya

The swamiji who is in charge of the worship and other rituals is known as the paryay swamiji. His Mutt is then known as the Paryaya Mutt. It is a system in which the eight pontiffs of Udupi undertake the responsibility of worshipping Lord Krishna and manage the temple by turn for a fixed period of time. Sri Krishna is worshipped fourteen times a day by the Swamiji.

Udupi Beach-Malpe Beach & St. Mary's Island

Malpe Beach is one of the beaches in Udupi. It is located in Maple, a natural port about 6Km from Udupi Temple. The location is popular among both locals and tourists. You can enjoy the beach and water sports here. St. Mary's Islands is one of the attractions in Maple. Regular ferry service ply from the Malpe fishing harbor to the islands.
