Onam 2015 - A Festival of Kerala

Onam is a festival of Kerala, celebrated with most number of cultural and tradition. Although this festival has its origin in Hindu mythology, it would be wrong to say that Onam is a religious festival, because Onam is for all people of all class and creed. It is celebrated by Kerala people or malayalees all over the world, irrespective of their religions. Onam 2015 falls on August 28, 2015.

It is a traditional ten day harvest festival starting from Atham day on Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug - Sep) and last four days is celebrated with best of Kerala culture flower carpet called 'Pookalam'. Following last four days is considered as important onam days in kerala.
  • First Onam (August 27, 2015)-Uthraadam Day
  • Second or Main Onam (August 28, 2015)-Thiruvonam Day
  • Third Onam (August 29, 2015)-Avittam Day
  • Fourth Onam (August 30, 2015)-Chathayam Day
Onam welcomes the spirit of Mahabali,a mythical king who ruled Kerala a very long time ago, assures him that his people are happy and wish him well. On Thiruvonam Day, people wear new clothes, referred to as Onakkodi, decorates beautiful onam pookalam and organize special Onasadhya (traditional feast) comprising a minimum of 11 dishes prepared on the Thiruvonam day.
